World Cup 2026: The Knockout Stage Is On – Round of 16 With Heavyweights

The 2026 World Cup has left the group stage behind and entered the knockout phase. Plenty is new: 48 teams, an extra round of 32, unfamiliar kick-off times from North America. An overview of the format, the state of play and the heavyweight round-of-16 ties.

World Cup 2026: The Knockout Stage Is On – Round of 16 With Heavyweights

The 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico has reached its decisive phase: the groups are done, and the tournament now continues in knockout mode. The round of 16 has been under way since 4 July, followed by the quarter-finals (9–12 July), the semi-finals and the final on 19 July in New Jersey. From the quarter-finals onward, every match is played in the USA. For viewers in Europe that means many games only kick off late in the evening, because North America gets going when the working day here is long over.

What is different about this World Cup

This is the first World Cup with 48 teams instead of 32. That has reshaped the bracket: before the familiar round of 16 there is now an additional round, the round of 32. More teams, more matches, more knockout nights – and more chances for underdogs to spring a surprise.

From a German point of view the tournament was short: the national team was already knocked out in the first knockout round. So the focus here is less on the home side than on the question of who will fight it out for the title.

The state of the round of 16

The action opened on 4 July with two clear results: Morocco beat Canada 3-0, and France saw off Paraguay 1-0. The remaining ties in the top half of the draw followed over the weekend.

The second half of the round of 16 is where it gets really exciting:

  • Portugal vs Spain: the Iberian derby, an early final between two title contenders.
  • USA vs Belgium: the hosts in front of their own crowd against an experienced European side.
  • Argentina vs Egypt: the reigning world champions looking to take the next step towards defending their title.
  • Switzerland vs Colombia: an open contest for the last quarter-final spot.

Only once these matches are played will the full quarter-final bracket be set. What is already clear: with France, Argentina, Portugal and Spain, several big favourites are still in the tournament – along with Morocco, a team that caused a stir at the last World Cup.

What it comes down to now

In the knockout stage there is no points cushion left: one bad evening and the tournament is over. That makes the coming days the real heart of the World Cup – tight games, extra time and penalty shoot-outs included. Anyone who wants to lift the trophy has to deliver in every single match now.
